When it comes to planning a proposal at The Lodge at Sea Island, timing and location matter. The sunset views over the marsh and the nightly bagpiper create an atmosphere that feels uniquely Sea Island. Adrian reached out at the beginning of January to photograph a surprise proposal for Caitlyn, and together we mapped out every detail to ensure the moment unfolded naturally.

At the beginning of January, Adrian reached out to me on Instagram about photographing a surprise proposal for his girlfriend, Caitlyn, while they were visiting Sea Island Beach Club. From our very first message, it was clear how much intention he was putting into this moment. Together, we carefully planned an unforgettable, picture-perfect evening at The Lodge at Sea Island.

If you’ve ever visited The Lodge, you know that every night at sunset the bagpipers play across the putting green. It’s a beautiful Sea Island tradition and the perfect backdrop for a proposal. Adrian made dinner reservations and suggested they spend a little time putting while waiting for their reservation time. Meanwhile, I arrived (obnoxiously early, as always) to scout the light and choose the perfect point without drawing attention.

As the bagpipers began to play and the sun dipped lower over the marsh, Adrian subtly moved further and further away from the crowd with each putt. I slowly inched closer, watching from a distance, camera ready to go.

Just as the sun slipped below the horizon, painting the sky in stunning pinks and blues, he got down on one knee! The sunset was unreal and the timing could not have been more perfect.

One of my favorite parts of photographing a proposal is being the very first person to congratulate the couple. After a month of planning together, it is such an honor to finally meet face-to-face in that joyful moment. It’s equally special to finally meet the bride-to-be after hearing so many wonderful things about her throughout the planning process.

As nearby guests cheered and celebrated them, the sweet Lodge staff brought out celebratory champagne. Caitlyn and Adrian had a few quiet moments to soak it all in before we walked the grounds for newly-engaged portraits. The golden hour light across the marsh and the elegance of the Lodge architecture created the most romantic setting for their first photos as fiancés.

They ended the evening with dinner at Colt & Alison, still glowing from the surprise and surrounded by the magic that makes Sea Island proposals so unforgettable!
